6.21.26 - One Wing Wonder, Fox Squad’s Back

Greetings and salutations! How’s everybody doing? Good? Good.

Lucius (my crochet dragon, feel free to call him Luci if you so desire) has one wing complete! So maybe he can fly? Probably not, I don’t think most things that are supposed to have two wings can fly with only one. But he looks much more like a lil dragon now (though technically a amphithere, because he doesn’t have any arms or legs).

Say hi Luci!

Aw, look at ‘im. The wing ended up being a little weird as I finished it and was attaching it. It felt like the area that was getting attached to the body was not the correct section based upon the silhouette of the wing, but I double and triple checked and couldn’t find anything indicating I was doing something wrong. It might be something to do with the fact that the yarn I used for the web was lighter than the yarn I used for the edges (same weight, but different brand so not identical). We’ll see what happens when I do the other wing!

I stayed true to my word and started up on Fox Squad again! But that lasted all of two days before I got a burst of inspiration to write about Mass Effect (which was absolutely caused by me starting to play through Mass Effect again) so now it looks like we’re going to be ping-ponging between those two. Deepest apologies to Elara and Eko. I’ll get back to your story soon!

Part of what drives me to write these fan fictions is that I love playing video games, but no matter how open the game is, or how much choice it gives you, there are still TONS of limitations. Until we get full on AI (not this “AI” drabble that is being peddled right now, which is BY DEFINITION NOT AI), the game developers can only give you so much choice, because they have to come up with the outcome to said choice. There are games where you can “do whatever you want”, which really just means “do whatever you want within the parameters we give you in the game.”

And I’m not ragging on game developers! Like, it’s just reality. I don’t expect anything different. But there are times where you are forced to make a “hard decision”, such as you can only save one person, or you have to decide which city to help, but that choice feels a little contrived. Yes, there are times that it works out both with the established story rules and the constraints of the game, but there are other times where it feels needlessly restrictive. Like when you gather a whole group of companions, and you’re going on the final mission to stop the BBG from destroying the world, blah blah, and the game says “Okay, now which two companions do you want to come with you?”

Um, how about all of them? Unless you give me a good reason that I can only take two, it’s pretty dumb to think that in the battle to save the world, we’re only gonna send a COUPLE of our super powerful heroes.

So I like writing fan fiction to retell some points of the story that make more sense!

And, obviously, to have my characters fall in love in ways that they probably can’t in their normal medium. So sue me.

Lego Minas Tirith continues to rise, and maybe one of these times I’ll show a progress pic. My 3D printer needs a little TLC (I think it’s got a broken piece of filament jammed in the head), which I’m going to try to get to tomorrow, so alas there wasn’t a lot of cool printing happening this week. But I’m hoping to design up and print some token holders for a card game that we played this past week at game night. There’s plenty of space in the box for some better token storage, rather then all of them just bouncing around willy nilly.

And that’ll do it for this update. Everyone have a lovely week and I’ll talk to ya in 7!
